Please join me on The Charles Brittingham show, Sunday June 23. On Wilm 1450 am News talk radio from 7-9 pm.
Dr. Sandra Jones and Ms. Barbara Lewis, two dynamic women on the front lines to oppose the Death Penalty will be joining us. You don’t want to miss this show. We will be talking about why and how you should help; The Campaign to end the Death Penalty and why Delaware should be the 19th state to do so. http://www.nodeathpenalty.org/ Are people falsely accused? Do poor people receive inadequate legal representation? Do we have perjured testimony and mistaken eyewitness testimony? Do we have racial prejudice in America? Do we allow the jailhouse “snitch” testimony? Are there suppression and/or misinterpretation of mitigating evidence? Are there community/political pressure to solve a case? Do we have states & jurisdictions that are reluctant, out right refuse or try to put Statuette of Limitations on DNA testing? Do we have police and prosecutorial misconduct?Do we execute the insane / mentally ill? Violating the U.S. Constitution (Ford v. Wainwright, 1986). Are people of color far more likely to be executed than white people, especially if the victim is white? Are there corrupt judges sending our kids jail?
The answer to all the above is YES!
Corruption is indeed within the prison system, mostly driven by the growth in private prisons seeking profits by any means necessary. The scheme to channel juvenile offenders into a private detention facility in exchange for payments from the owners is real. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/11/mark-ciavarella-jr_n_924324.html
Since 1973, over 130 people have been released from death rows throughout the country due to evidence of their wrongful convictions. In 2003 alone, 10 wrongfully convicted defendants were released from death row. We need to recognize that there are some serious problems and flaws in the U.S. death penalty system and just Stop the killing. Since the death penalty discriminates on the basis of race and income, does not prevent violent crime or the taking of human life, it kills innocent people and it’s unconstitutional. I oppose the death penalty in all cases, regardless of the crime, guilt or innocence. The death penalty violates the right to life and is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment that cannot be reversed if the victim is proven innocent.
